To be a vibrant and transformative community of faith, where lives are transformed, relationships are restored, and hope is renewed.
Our mission is to glorify God, serve our community, and nurture discipleship through passionate worship, compassionate outreach as we prepare people for the kingdom of God.
THE INCEPTION:
This church started off as English section of St Paul`s Anglican Church Ishagatedo, a predominantly Yoruba
speaking Church on April 17, 1977.
This pioneering effort was led by then Bro. Goodhope I. Kanu, now Ven. G.I Kanu (RTD) and a few other Igbo
worshippers in the church who were not proficient in the Yoruba language.
The English services occupied the 7:00am – 8:00am morning slot every Sunday. Friction however arose when
the English Services encroached on the Yoruba Service timing and the need for a solution arose.
PRIMARY SCHOOL WORSHIP CENTRE:
This solution came, through the influence of the Rev. Pa E. O. Oyebajo, the Superintending Priest of the Church
and Vicar of all Saints` Church, Oshodi, as he convinced the Mushin office of The State Ministry of Education to
authorize the use of the hall in the adjoining primary school for Church Services on Sunday. This approval was
given on May 2, 1980.
The Church moved into the Primary School as St Paul’s Anglican Church Ishagatedo, Igbo section, as the
worshippers were predominantly igbo speaking.
THE CHALLENGES POSED BY THE HEADMASTER:
The Headmaster of the school, St. Paul’s Primary School Ishagatedo did not cooperate with the new church. He
decided on his own when to allow or deny access into the premises on Sundays. He desired always to be
persuaded before cooperating. The Eight years sojourn of the church in the school premises did not leave too
many good memories. However, the church grew and was well established.
THE NEW SITE:
As a result of the constant harassment by the headmaster of the Primary School hosting the Church, the need
to secure a permanent place of worship became of paramount importance. Meanwhile the Church which
started with about 12 families had expanded to a few hundreds of members. Four members of the church; Bro.
GoodhopeKanu, Eugene Akoma, Festus Nwokolo and Alex Ofunne were trained as Lay Readers and they
administered the Church to the best of their abilities from inception in 1980 to the early 90`s before the posting
of an Agent, Mr. Emmanuel Okwu now Rev. Canon Okwu (Rtd) the Choir, Band and AYF which started as one
unit was headed by late ChibuikeChinmadu. The other groups; The Star of Bethlehem, EFAC, Christ
Ambassadors, YWCA, Fountain of Hope, Mother Union, Christian Women Fellowship, among others, assisted
the Church leadership in growing the Church.
By reason of this growth the church was financially able to acquire a parcel of land through the assistance of
Rev. & Mrs. S.K. Olarewaju now Ven S.K. Olarewaju (Rtd) the Superintending Vicar. A temporary structure was
put in place early enough before the final embargo was placed on the use of the Primary School premises.
The Church moved to the present site on Rogation Sunday of 1988. By this time, work has also started on the
main Church Building through direct labor supervised by Engr. Emma Odega. On that first worship at the new
site, the Superintending Vicar, Rev. S.K Olarewaju changed the name of the church from St Paul’s Anglican
Church Ishagatedo (Igbo section) to St. Paul’s Anglican Church Oke-Afa. The Layreader in charge was Bro.
Eugene Akoma now Rev. Eugene Akoma (Rtd).
On Palm Sunday in 1993, the first and new Vicar of the Church, Rev Canon Cornelius Ajayi (Rtd). moved the
worship of the Church to the main Church building. This Church building was eventually dedicated by Rt. Revd.
AbiodumAdetiloye, the Bishop of the then, Lagos Diocese on June 20, 1999.
CHURCH GROWTH:
The Church witnessed rapid growth both physically and spiritually. Many new Churches were birthed majorly through the
instrumentality of EFAC (Evangelical Fellowship in the Anglican Communion) of the church. The Church embarked on over
fifty (50) Evangelical Missions in many Anglican and non-Anglican Dioceses in Nigeria and outside Nigeria. These were
powered by the Christ Ambassadors Society of the Church.
ULTRA-MODERN CHURCH BUILDING:
As the Church became largely an Evangelical Church consequent upon the series of dynamic Pastors posted,
the growth became astronomical. The beautiful Church Auditorium became grossly in adequate for the
teeming worshippers. A conspicuous and notable mango tree nearby provided shade for hundreds who could
not be accommodated in the Church building every Sunday.
The need for a large church auditorium became obvious.
In March 2014 after a powerful ministration and encouragement by the Bishop, Rt. Revd. Dr. OlusiolaOdedeji,
the bishop of Lagos West Diocese, funds were raised for the project. It is noteworthy that in a record three (3)
years, the Church was fully completed and dedicated under the leadership of Ven. ChineduEkpunobi by our
amiable Bishop, Rt. Revd. Dr. OlusolaOdedeji in March 2017.
SPIRITUAL GROWTH:
The church has continue to grow with a current numerical strength of over 2000 worshippers. The teenagers
and children churches are also experiencing rapid growth.
Our Archdeacon, Ven. OluwaseunBolatittoDokumu, the Vicar, Ven. Dr. Chudi Obi, our mummy Evang.
EbeleChudi Obi and the Assisting Priests are working very hard to keep the spiritual tempo very high. They are
also doing all in their power to meet the various needs of the worshippers. This church is set for higher heights
by the Grace of God.
